Carole writes :  After the beautiful Christmas and New Year weather in Menorca, the last few weeks have been somewhat chilly ! I hope whether you are in Menorca, the UK or elsewhere that you are keeping warm.

January was a busy month – The Blessing of the Animals in Es Castell was the usual fun event – I found some photos on Facebook showing Rev. Paul and Father Alberto blessing horses, dogs and other animals ! Worth having a look if you can.

In mid-January, 15 of us (including some visitors) enjoyed a good lunch at Opera Restaurant on the port in Mahon and generally managed to stay warm despite the (at times) torrential rain and wind outside.

Then there was the Ecumenical Service for Christian Unity at Santa Margarita hosting the Catholic church, with Father Alberto and Father Gerard joining us, together with representation from the Spanish Evangelical church in Mahon.

Looking back to December some other news of possible interest :

You may have heard that some significant works were carried out to the church – the problems with the damp ceiling were successfully rectified and the church was then repainted, with new tiles laid on the altar floor.  This was at a cost of some 8000€ although we were very grateful for generous donations of 2500€ towards the work. The church is now looking splendid and ready to welcome summer visitors !

Outreach to the Wider Community –

  • Before Christmas, we were able to fund 76 food vouchers for 42 families, providing a Christmas lunch for those in need in Es Castell (distributed via the Social Services department).
  • Ukrainian Refugees – Also in December we were again able to give a further 400€ in support vouchers for Ukrainian refugees living in Menorca and with no other support.  There were around 40 refugees at the last count, mostly mothers with children from 1 to 18.

Ukraine – support boxes of food and other much needed items were donated in December and transported to Ukraine (via our contacts in Palma).  More boxes have been sent in January.
