Carole writes : Hurray – June is here! More visitors will no doubt be with us over the next weeks and we look forward to seeing you. Do join us for some of the social events too if you can.
Paul and Kate have returned from their well earned break – it is good to see them back.
MAY 2023
Eurovision Style Song contest – This fun event organised by Hazel and David Martin at the end of April was enjoyed by all and raised 1440€ to help victims of the Turkey & Syrian Earthquake. Turkey represented by Mo of BJs in Son Parc was the clear winner, which seemed a fair result. Paul earned joint 2nd place and Hazel Martin has put her boots away for a future event ! Thanks to all who supported and to David and Hazel for organising.
At the Annual Meeting of Parishioners and the APCM on 23 April, David Green and Trevor Jones were elected as Church Wardens. The PCC for this year comprises, the Wardens, Suzanne Hodges, the treasurer, Margaret and Trevor Jones, Diocesan Synod representatives, Liz Astley, Carole Brayford and Colin Guanaria.
Coronation Weekend. Our celebrations began with a Coronation themed service on Sunday led by Michael Higgins (standing in for Paul) followed by a special coronation cake (above) and cava (thanks to Suzanne & Mike Hodges who sponsored this in celebration of their 20th wedding anniversary). We had been invited to a BYO picnic on the Isla del Rey following the service although regrettably there were some problems with transport on this occasion, although Michael and Margaret Higgins were able to get to the island where Michael conducted a short service in the chapel.
Celebration Tapas Lunch – this was held on Monday 8 May in Son Parc hosted by Carole & Tony Brayford with some local friends joining too. A very enjoyable afternoon.
JUNE 2023
Events coming up in June
- Thursday 8 June – Concert by “Cor Femeni de Grupo Filarmonic del Ateneo” (Ateneo Female Choir – although there will be some “Honorary Girls” with male voices !!) – who will be entertaining us with some light classical music – in church starting at 8.15pm. No tickets are necessary but there will be an opportunity at the end to make a donation to Santa Margarita.
- Lunch – Wednesday 21 June at restaurant Mesón Can Jaume in Es Mercadal at 1.30pm (directions via Google maps, or see below). The cost for the menu del dia will be 20€ again. It helps with planning if you can let me know as soon as possible if you would like to join us, or sign up on the sheet on the church notice board.
JULY 2023
Our Bishop, the Rt. Rev. David Hamid, will be coming to Menorca for the weekend of 22/23 July, for a pastoral visit, and to participate in the celebration of our patronal festival (which will be moved to the weekend this year). We hope to hold a chaplaincy lunch on Sunday 23 July following the service so we can all have the opportunity to meet with Bishop David, and that Bishop Gerard of Menorca may also join us. More details shortly.
Outreach to the Wider Community –
- Ukraine – We continue to provide assistance where we can to the Ukrainians living on the island who have little or no support and were unable to find employment through the winter months.
- Turkey & Syria Earthquake Victims – The 1440€ raised at the Eurovision Song Contest has been donated to provide longer term support to the victims.
GOLF TOURNAMENT 2023. This will be held on Saturday, 2nd September. More details will be announced soon. Do put the date in your diaries if you are a golfer and remember to invite friends, visitors and neighbours to join this fundraising event.
