Carole writes :  Summer has arrived !  It has been really good to see some of our visitors returning and to meet new ones.  We look forward to catching up with others over the next few months.

JUNE 2023

The concert in church by the “Cor Femeni de Grupo Filarmonic del Ateneo” (Ateneo Female Choir – together with some “Honorary Girls !!) was a truly excellent evening and thoroughly enjoyed by all.  A total of €150 was collected afterwards to benefit church funds.

The June lunch was a moveable feast but finally was held on 21 June at Meson Can Jaume in Es Mercadal.  A very good meal and a jolly occasion with many of our visitors joining us.

Holy Communion was previously held at 5pm in Ciutadella on the last Sunday of each month.  On the 25 Junethe service was revived at the outdoor chapel in Cala’n Bosc (Cap d’Artrutx).  It is hoped this service will continue in the months to come for those living at that end of the island.

JULY 2023

Our Bishop, the Rt. Rev. David Hamid, will be making a pastoral visit to us for the weekend of 22/23 July, and to participate in the celebration of our patronal festival (which has been moved to the weekend this year).

  • Thursday 20 July 19.00.  Fiesta of Santa Margarita.  As in previous years we plan to celebrate the fiesta (patronal feast) with a procession including band and an ecumenical prayer service, graced by the presence of our Bishop.  There will be refreshments afterwards.  If you can contribute a plate of nibbles do talk with Liz Astley or Kathy Rosseti.
  • Sunday 23 July.  The Bishop will preside and preach at the Sunday Eucharist at 11am.  Following the service there will be lunch so we all have the opportunity to meet with Bishop David.  It is hoped that there will also be a meeting with Bishop Gerard of Menorca.
  • Lunch 23 July at 1pm at Restaurant Ana Luisa, Cala Fonts (below the Hamilton Hotel).  The menu will be mixed shared starters including some salads, followed by paella (including a vegetarian version).  Wine or soft drinks, desserts and coffee are all included.

We want you to come !! and no one should be left out on account of the cost ! However capacity is limited to 35 to 40 people so sign up early !  25€ each or whatever you can manage is welcome – see Paul.

It is important that you also indicate if you require the vegetarian paella.  A sign up sheet is on the church notice board or let Carole or Paul know.

  • There are no plans for events in August at present.  No doubt we will all be mopping our brows and trying to keep cool.

SEPTEMBER 2023

Golf Tournament 2023.  This will be held on Saturday, 2nd September. If you are a golfer do ensure the date is in your diary.   We are grateful that Malcolm Ellis and Colin Guanaria are again organising this with Paola at the Golf Club.  If you would like to play put your name down when the Golf Club lists are up.  Paola will pair you with someone if you have no partner or get your own 4 together.  There will be refreshments afterwards with the prize giving.  Remember to invite friends, visitors and neighbours to join this fundraising event.  Part of the proceeds from the tournament will be donated to a charity – Club Vidalba, which supports recreational activities for young people with special needs in Menorca.

Events to look forward to in the autumn –

  • Lunch at 23 Avellino in Mahon in September or October – to be arranged.
  • A BYO picnic at the Cricket Club in September or October, or even a BBQ if this can be organised.
  • The Mitganit Choir will be treating us to a concert in church in perhaps October or November – watch this space for details.

Outreach to the Wider Community –

  • Ukraine – As the war in Ukraine continues we continue to collect funds for local refugees, who have apparently received a lot less Government aid than expected

The weekly services of Holy Communion are recorded each week and can be easily accessed via a link.  If you are not on island or cannot be in church but would like to follow the service, contact Paul and he will add you to the weekly email that he sends out with details of the access link.

Make a note in your diary of the above dates and join us if you can.  More information from Carole or from Rev. Paul.   If anyone is willing to host a future event – coffee morning, afternoon tea, or simple tapas that would be much appreciated.  Please let Carole know.
