Carole writes :  It has been (and is) hot but despite one or two particularly hot days we have not suffered as much as other parts of Europe and as aways we are blessed with the Menorcan breeze!  The priority for everyone is to stay cool and in the shade!  The summer tourists from Europe and other parts of the world have arrived in numbers rivalling 2019 and the roads are very busy.   I am looking forward to September when I will be returning to the island and it should be calmer !!

JULY 2023

It was a delight to welcome our Bishop, the Rt. Rev. David Hamid and his wife Colleen, for a   pastoral visit in mid July.  The Bishop arrived on Thursday 20 July and was able to take part in the procession to celebrate the fiesta of Santa Margarita from the Catholic church in Es Castell to Santa Margarita.  This was led by a band, with Santa Margarita herself following on the “cart” and with the Bishop, Paul and the Spanish clergy processing behind together with all of us and many of the Es Castell residents.  After a short service at Santa Margarita in both Spanish and English we shared refreshments.  A selection of photographs are included but too many to include them all.

On Sunday 23 July the Bishop presided and preached at the Sunday Eucharist.

Liz & Tony Astley were celebrating 50 years of marriage and treated us to cava and some wonderful cake following the service.  Congratulations and thanks to both of them !

This was followed by a very good lunch at Restaurant Ana Luisa, Es Castell where we enjoyed a wonderful selection of shared starters and then some excellent paellas.  It was a beautiful setting sitting in the shade and with a cooling breeze.  An occasion enjoyed by all.

AUGUST 2023

Most of us go to ground in August either back in the UK or keeping cool as best we can.  There will be no shared social events organised until September when we will look forward to meeting up again.

SEPTEMBER 2023

Golf Tournament 2023.  This will be held on Saturday, 2nd September.  We are grateful that Malcolm Ellis and Colin Guanaria are again organising this with Paola at the Golf Club.  The cost for members will be 35€ and for non-members 35€ + green fees.  There are 7 prizes with trophies and a good tapas lunch with water, soft drinks and beer. The format is individual Stableford as usual.   If you would like to play, put your name down when the Golf Club lists are up.  Paola will pair you with someone if you have no partner or get your own 4 together.  Remember to invite friends, visitors and neighbours to join this important fundraising event. If you are able to sponsor a hole then please contact Colin Guanaria, who will be delighted to hear from you.  Part of the proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the charity, Club Vidalba, which supports recreational activities for young people with special needs in Menorca.

Events to look forward to in the autumn –

  • Likely date for our September lunch – Sunday 17 September – make a note in your diary !
  • In September/October we could have lunch at 23 Avellino in Mahon or a BBQ or BYO picnic at the Cricket Club if this can be organised.
  • The Coral Mitjanit will be treating us to a concert in church in perhaps October or November – watch this space for details.
  • Holy Communion was previously held at 5pm in Ciutadella on the last Sunday of each month.  On the 25 Junethe service was revived at the outdoor chapel in Cala’n Bosc (Cap d’Artrutx).  It is hoped this service will continue in the months to come for those living at that end of the island (last Sunday of each summer month).

Outreach to the Wider Community –

  • Ukraine – As the war in Ukraine sadly continues we welcome donations to our fund providing support for local refugees, who have apparently received a lot less Government aid than expected. It is always more difficult for them to find work in the autumn and winter which has a severe impact on their ability to support themselves and their families.
  • Peru – The Archdeaconry Synod report to the APCM earlier this year from Margaret & Trevor Jones detailed our relationship with the Anglican Diocese in Peru which goes back more than 10 years.  As well as prayer support, the donations from our Archdeaconry contribute to a wide range of ministry, including Christian formation, children’s and youth ministry, pastoral care, safeguarding, soup kitchens, disabled peoples’ ministry, women’s ministry (especially for incarcerated women), ambassadors of health and communication (Diocesan news).
    • The Rev. Deborah Chapman (Barcelona) is the Archdeaconry link person and has recently received a letter from Bishop Jorge in Peru expressing his grateful thanks for the donations we send to enable ministry to the very poor of the country but explains that the Diocese is currently in great financial difficulty and asking if we are able to send further donations.
    • The PCC are responding to this with a gift from Santa Margarita.  However if any  individuals would like to add to the gift to be sent from the church, do PLEASE CONTACT PAUL.  Many of us are very blessed and we are all aware that everything we have comes from our loving and faithful God.  It would be wonderful if we, as a small chaplaincy, were able to generously share our good fortune.

The weekly services of Holy Communion are recorded each week and can be easily accessed via a link.  If you are not on island or cannot be in church but would like to follow the service, contact Paul and he will add you to the weekly email that he sends out with details of the access link.

If anyone is willing to host a future event – coffee morning, afternoon tea, or simple tapas that would be much appreciated.  Please let Carole know.
LUNCH VENUE RECOMMENDATIONS ALWAYS WELCOME!
